Background story

Good education for a bright future

While earning a degree does not always guarantee success, getting a good education ensures a solid foundation that will stand anyone in good stead in whatever they may end up doing in life.

Beyond the modules and lessons, an environment where students are given the space to flourish and view fresh perspectives is key. This will ensure that they are not only book smart, but are also equipped to think critically and apply what they have learnt in a multitude of situations.

In collaboration with Murdoch University, Kaplan’s goal is to create such an environment, where students thrive and build their own distinctive identity.

Ms Ivy Lee, who holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Management and Marketing double major degree that she earned from Murdoch University at Kaplan, explained: “The programme is designed in such a way that all the modules within the programme are interlinked and the topics help individuals to learn from the basics to the management’s perspective which can be applied in the real world.”

Ms Ou Xiuying Shirley, 31, a Bachelor of Communication in Communication & Media Studies and Public Relations graduate from Murdoch University at Kaplan, agrees.

She said: “I liked that the programme was well-paced, emphasising on creative thinking.  The topics covered were interesting. The assignments, specifically, tested my understanding of the units and provided opportunities for me to articulate my thoughts and analyses of issues in various forms including essays, reports and/or in-class presentations. “

At Kaplan, students are ensured regular classes with full academic support throughout the duration of their course.  And under the partnership between Kaplan and Murdoch University, teachings are conducted by both the university’s faculty and local lecturers as selected by Murdoch.

Ms Ou enthused: “Kaplan’s lecturers are inspirational. Not only are they experts in their own fields but more importantly, they are caring and they were like peers to their students. In addition, Kaplan’s course co-ordinators were friendly and patient.”

Mr Jimmy Lim Kok Keong, 40, who graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resource Management and Management from Murdoch University at Kaplan, shared the same sentiments. He said: “The lecturers and staff were professional and attentive to student feedback.”

Thanks in part to the education they received at Kaplan, the graduates are now steadily moving towards their career goals.

Ms Ou, who is now a Senior Corporate Communications Executive at Ministry of Law, relates how studying at Kaplan has helped her perform well in her job. She said: “I have derived greatest satisfaction from being able to tap on the knowledge I attained in the course of the programme such as managing communications-related issues, coming up with realistic tactics and strategies, harnessing my understanding of social media, and working effectively in a team.”

Ms Lee, 30, also credited her career growth to her experience at Kaplan. She said: “Previously, I was working in an MNC with limited growth opportunities. However, ever since I graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree, I went for an interview with my current employer and got the job based on my qualifications and experience. Thereafter, I was also given the opportunity to coach and transfer my knowledge to my peers.”

Likewise, Mr Lim believes that his degree helped him secure his position as a Manager at Council for Third Age (C3A), saying: “I had no doubt that I had made a right choice then.”

When asked why they chose Murdoch University at Kaplan, the graduates explained that it was due to the double major degree programmes that they can earn.  It offers over 40 of these programmes in various disciplines ranging from Accounting, Finance and Banking; Business and Management; Communication and Media; Hospitality and Tourism Management; Psychology, and Information Technology.

Now working as a Reinsurance Broker at Bowring Marsh Asia Pte Ltd, Ms Lee said: “It makes the price that we pay for worth every cent! The duration of the program is relatively short and the modules for both assignments and examinations are applicable to reality.”

A course can be completed in as short as 16 months – a plus point for students, particularly working adults, who want to finish their programme quickly.

Ms Ou added: “Murdoch University has a sound reputation as one of the top institutions in Australia, and its communication programmes, specifically, have been well-received. Kaplan has a good standing among private institutions here in Singapore.

Indeed, a good education is vital in securing one’s future. Therefore, it is prudent that you choose an institution which caters to your needs and provides the necessary support in order for you to have the best learning journey.
