Worker involved in fight at dormitory given 2 weeks jail for using criminal force

A foreign worker from India was involved in the fracas at a Kaki Bukit dormitory last month was sentenced to two weeks in jail.

Indian national Dharmaraj Ramesh on Tuesday pleaded guilty to an amended charge of using criminal force on Bangladeshi national Ahsan Habib Md Fazlan Rahman, 26, at Homestay Residences. The 25-year-old is the first accused arrested in connection with the fight at the dormitory to plead guilty.

The construction worker admitted to throwing an empty beer can in the Bangladeshi worker's direction on March 5 after he became irritated by the noise they were making while they watched a cricket match that night. The ensuing confrontation between the two men later resulted in a large-scale fight at a nearby carpark.

Dharmaraj's sentence, backdated to his remand date of March 28, means he can be released on Tuesday.

With one of the accused having been earlier given a discharge amounting to an acquittal, this means that of the 17 men charged for their alleged involvement in the brawl, 15 are still to be dealt with.
