Two suspects in their 50s arrested for thefts in shops

SINGAPORE - The two men in their 50s would go into a shop. One would ask questions to distract the store owner while the other stole. The theft is discovered only after they had left without buying anything.

On Wednesday, the two suspects aged 51 and 55 were arrested. They are believed to be involved in at least three cases of thefts since June using such a mode of operation.

Officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division had earlier established the identities of the supsects, but the duo remained at large.

On Wednesday, they were spotted near Woodlands Checkpoint and subsequently arrested. On the very same day, they are believed to be involved in a case of theft in Yishun using the same method. The stolen cash from the shop owner's purse was found on the suspects.

The maximum penalty for theft is jail of up to three years and a fine.
