The 42-year-old Singaporean who set himself on fire near a Johor Baru petrol kiosk on Saturday morning has died.

Mr Stephen Lew Soon Kiang had succumbed to his injuries at about 10pm on Sunday, reported the Malaysia's New Straits Times early Monday morning.

A spokesman from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday afternoon that Singapore's Consulate-General across the Causeway has been in touch with Mr Lew's family and it has also been providing consular assistance to them.

Mr Lew's mother and brother had arrived in Johor Baru on Sunday morning, and are assisting the Malaysian police in ongoing investigations.

It was earlier reported that Mr Lew had used a four-litre container to buy petrol on the pretext that his car had broken down near a Johor Baru petrol station at about 9.20am on Saturday. He then doused himself with the petrol and sparked himself off using a cigarette lighter after he left the station.
