Police nab 36-year-old man suspected of armed robbery

SINGAPORE - A 36-year-old man, believed to have been involved in a case of armed robbery, has been nabbed by police.

He was arrested near Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 on Aug 9, the police said in a statement on Sunday. The man is suspected to have robbed a 27-year-old woman of her handbag after threatening her with a knife on Aug 3.

The incident took place at about 10.42pm, in the vicinity of Ang Mo Kio Street 51. The victim called the police hotline immediately after her encounter with the man.

In Sunday's statement, the police said that officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division had conducted extensive ground enquiries and investigative probes after receiving the call.

They managed to retrieve a CCTV image of the suspect, and arrested him on Saturday after spotting him in the vicinity of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8.

The victim's handbag and personal belongings, as well as the knife believed to be used to commit the robbery, were recovered and seized as case exhibits.

The suspect will be charged in Court on Monday for an offence of Armed Robbery. If convicted, he may face a jail term of up to 14 years and be caned a minimum of 12 strokes.
