Members of public help nab suspected snatch thief

SINGAPORE - A 45-year-old found himself being pursued by two men on Sunday after allegedly grabbing the handbag of a 47-year-old woman.

The victim, who happened to be walking along Woodlands Road at 11.50pm last night, cried for help and ran after the man. Her shouts did not go unheard and two members of the public joined her in her chase, police said in a statement.

The suspect was caught and detained at a bus stop along Woodlands Road by the two members of the public and was thereafter handed over to the police. The stolen handbag was also returned to its owner.

Should he be convicted for the offence of Snatch Theft under Section 356 of the Penal Code, he faces a maximum jail term of 7 years and may be caned.
