A salesman who punched a sales promoter after the two of them bumped into each other along a narrow corridor at a store was sentenced to two weeks' jail on Monday.

Lawrence Teow Peng Law, 52, admitted to an amended charge of punching Mr Cheo Boon Choon , 53, on the face twice at Harvey Norman at Millenia Walk, Raffles Boulevard, on Jan 7, 2012. He was originally charged with causing grievous hurt.

The two were both sales promoters for mattresses from their respective companies and deployed at the store.

At about 8.30pm that day, Teow was walking along a narrow passageway in the showroom when he bumped into the victim who was standing ahead of him. Teow then punched the victim twice on the face.

The victim did not retaliate. He walked away and reported the incident to the manager.

That evening, he sought treatment at Changi General Hospital and was found to have bleeding in the right eye.

He was later seen at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and found to have a detached retina and had to undergo surgery.

According to the SNEC doctor, the retinal detachment was "not caused solely by being punched'' but was most likely "precipitated by the punch'' on the evening of Jan 7, 2012. The doctor also noted that Mr Cheo's history of high myopia had contributed to the retinal detachment.

Teow, who is out on $15,000 bail, will start his sentence on Wednesday.

He could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000 for voluntarily causing hurt.
