SINGAPORE - A valet who stole CashCards from vehicles at Paragon shopping mall was jailed for five weeks on Wednesday.

Adam Malik Abdul Karem, 45, who faced six charges, pleaded guilty to two charges of theft and one of criminal misappropriation. The total amount involved in the six charges is $2,821.

The court heard that between March 11 and 13 this year, the first victim, Mr Brad Colin Paterson, 39, drove his car to the Orchard Road mall and used the valet services.

After Adam Malik had parked the victim's BMW, he stole Mr Paterson's CashCard with a stored value of $122 from the in-vehicle unit.

Between March 1 and 31, he similarly stole Ms Pauline Chong's Cashcard after he had parked her vehicle. The CashCard had a stored value of $164.

In both cases, he refunded the CashCards into his bank account and spent all the money. From Jan 16 to April 14 this year, Adam Malik misappropriated 60 CashCards with a total value of $2,309 from unknown vehicle owners after parking their vehicles.

Adam Malik, who has a theft conviction, could have been jailed for up to three years and/or fined for each charge of theft.

For criminal misappropriation, the maximum penalty is two years and a fine.
