Five people arrested for loanshark activities

SINGAPORE- Five people aged 18 to 22 have been arrested for being involved in loanshark activities in Jalan Kayu, Toa Payoh and Hougang.

Police officers from Tanglin Police Division spotted two men and a woman behaving suspiciously at a HDB block in Toa Payoh at around 2.50am on Friday.

Officers found permanent markers, bottles of red paint and crayons on them. There were also signs of loanshark harassment such as writings on a wall and burn marks on the metal gate of a unit in the block.

Later, police arrested two other male accomplices around Ang Mo Kio Central.

All five will be charged in court on Saturday under the the Moneylenders Act.

First-time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment can be jailed up to five years, fined between $5,000 to $50,000 and caned between three to six times.
