75 shoplifters arrested in the first three months of this year

Police arrested 75 shoplifters, aged between 13 and 73, at shopping malls along Orchard Road in the first three months of this year.

The stolen items range from groceries to clothing and designer handbags.

They were worth nearly $11,000.

Police said in a statement on Wednesday that the stepped-up enforcement by retailers has helped to apprehend more offenders.

"The authority has been working closely with retailers to deter and detect theft. Many retailers have enhanced their security measures through better training of their staff and strategic placement of closed-circuit television cameras."

Shop theft is punishable with a prison term of up to seven years and a fine.
