British-based Whitbread to open its first hotel in Singapore in 2016

SINGAPORE- British-based Whitbread, which operates hotel brand Premier Inn, is set to open its first hotel in Singapore in the middle of 2016.

Designed to meet the needs of the "rapidly growing economy travel segment in the region", the 300-room Premier Inn Singapore Beach Road aims to provide guests with a "value-for-money experience", said the company in a statement on Tuesday.

It will feature amenities that cater to both business and leisure travellers, such as a swimming pool, a gym, and meeting facilities.

The hotel will be located near the cultural districts of Haji Lane and Arab Street as well as the bustling Marina Bay Central Business District. It will also be the only international hotel that within one kilometre of the Singapore Sports Hub.

The average price of a room is expected to range from $160 to $190.

Whitbread's upcoming hotel here comes in as part of its plans to expand its global presence in three key regions, which is to set up some 10,000 new rooms by 2018 across Southeast Asia - including Singapore - India and the Middle East.

"Singapore has a competitive hotel landscape set within a strong growth market in Southeast Asia," said Mr Aly Shariff, senior vice-president of operations at Premier Inn Asia.

"It is therefore a vital part in our international expansion strategy and will support our growth in the region."

Mr Erik Van Keulen, senior vice-president of development at Premier Inn Asia Pacific, added: "Opening new hotels in these three key regions is now part of our long-term strategy to further enhance and develop the Premier Inn brand globally and we are confident it will be well received in these markets by value-conscious travellers."

Premier Inn currently operates over 670 hotels globally, including five hotels in the Middle East and three in India.
