Singapore shares close down 3.13 points to 3,327.09 on Friday

SINGAPORE - The local stock market closed on a quiet note on Friday as geopolitical concerns caused investors to exercise caution.

The Straits Times Index (STI) ended down by 3.13 points or 0.1 per cent to 3,327.09. It was little changed for the week, creeping up by just 1.6 points over last Friday's close of 3,325.5.

Some 1.77 billion shares worth a total value of $1.02 billion exchanged hands in the overall market.

Losers outnumbered gainers by a count of 200 to 184, while 412 stocks were unchanged.

Worries about a possible escalation in the Ukraine crisis spooked investors, who sold off stocks despite better than expected overnight economic data out of the United States on Thursday.

Fears about the prospect of a possible war deepened after Russian forces reportedly landed in Ukraine to lend support to pro-Russian separatists.

Elsewhere, Tokyo fell 0.2 per cent and Seoul dropped 0.4 per cent. Sydney and Hong Kong were both little changed but Shanghai added 1 per cent.
