SINGAPORE - The business community here is banding together to celebrate the nation's 50th birthday by honouring firms and workers who have contributed to the country's success.

It is kick-starting the process by launching two projects that will educate students about the pioneer generation of business owners and staff.

Under the 50 Schools, 50 SMEs initiative, teams from 50 secondary schools will be attached to 50 SMEs to learn about the companies' history and the entrepreneurial spirit of their founders and leaders.

The students will then do a write-up of the firms to which they are attached.

The other project - Local Champions, Global Leaders - has the same concept but will involve polytechnic and university students who will tell the stories of local industry champions and multinational companies.

The tertiary students will be allowed to use any creative medium to bring to life the entrepreneurial spirit of the firms.

There will be a top prize of $10,000 in cash for the winning entry in the tertiary students category.

Other laudable entries from both projects will also be selected to be displayed in a public exhibition by the middle of next year.

Firms that have committed to taking part in the projects include water treatment firm Hyflux, traditional Chinese medicine company Eu Yan Sang as well as food chains Jumbo Restaurant, Muthu's Curry and Mr Bean.

Spring Singapore, Economic Development Board, International Enterprise Singapore and National Library Board are the co-organisers.

Spring Singapore deputy chief executive Ted Tan said at a briefing on Tuesday: "By sharing memories and reflecting on the challenges and pioneering spirit, we wish to co-create a narrative for the hands that built Singapore, and that will continue to contribute towards the progress of our nation."

The organisers have also called on other firms to share their ideas on how they can take part in the nation's jubilee celebrations.

Interested parties can submit their ideas to info@singapore50-ei.sg.
