SINGAPORE - DBS Bank has launched a new service to enable its customers to access simple transactions from their accounts using SMSes.

The SMS Banking service enables its customers to check their account balances, perform card payments and transfer funds to their own accounts without the need to go through the Internet or online platform.

All they have to do is to register for the service by using their mobile phone to send an SMS text to DBS.

They can then key in some SMS commands to get the service they want.

The service is free and involves only the regular SMS charges with the mobile operator.

All three telcos - M1, SingTel and StarHub - are on board the programme.

DBS says the SMS Banking service will save customers much time.

For example, it takes about 10 seconds to complete a balance inquiry via SMS Banking, compared with about 30 seconds to check one's balances at an ATM

Mr Louis Foo, senior vice president of the eBusiness consumer banking group at DBS Bank Singapore, said in a statement: "While customers are increasingly adopting Internet banking, there is still a large number of customers using traditional channels such as ATMs or customer service hotline for balance inquiry.

"With SMS Banking, customers can use any mobile phones to perform simple banking transactions, thus saving time and eliminating the need to locate an ATM or call the bank."
