BANGKOK - Thailand's military junta has decided to scrap the 'One Tablet per Child' policy launched by the ousted Yingluck Shinawatra government, the Bangkok Post reported on Tuesday.

Education ministry officials quoted in the Post said the tablet project for the 2014 academic year was cancelled and the plan to purchase 402,889 tablet PCs for Grade 7 students in northern and northeastern provinces was to be discontinued.

Tablets should not be used as a main teaching tool for children who would be better off learning directly from teachers, said permanent secretary for education Suthasri Wongsaman.

The junta has also decided to put on ice Ms Yingluck's plan for high-speed trains and trim Thailand's infrastructure development budget to 2.4 trillion baht (S$93 billion) from the 3 trillion baht.

However, three electric train lines in Greater Bangkok, motorways and a dual-track railway are set to proceed in the 2015 fiscal year, the Post said, citing officials in the Transport Ministry.
