PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A total of 3,142 dengue cases were reported nationwide from July 13 to 19, up from 2,164 cases reported the week before.

From Jan to July 19, 51,987 dengue cases were reported, an increase of 252 per cent or 37,232 cases compared with the same period last year (14,755 cases), the Crisis Preparedness And Response Centre reported on its Facebook yesterday.

Two deaths brought the cumulative number of deaths to 94, compared with 29 deaths for the same period last year, a 224 per cent (65 deaths) increase.

From July 13 to 19, there were 124 hotspots nationwide - 94 in Selangor, 20 in Kelantan, three in Negri Sembilan, three in Sarawak and each in Penang, Perak, Malacca and Sabah.

The centre also reported that the National Blood Bank was short of blood platelet supply due to the increase in dengue cases and the need for blood platelet transfusion.

It urged the public to donate blood or blood platelets following the shortage.
