KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - The monorail service between Jalan Imbi and Jalan Hang Tuah stations is safe after a tunnel collapsed last week, officials said.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Project Implementation and Maintenance Deputy Director-General Datuk Mohd Najib Mohd said on Sunday that after going through several tests, DBKL was satisfied with the safety condition and it was now up to the Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd to finalise the safety assessment of the route before continuing the monorail service.

"We had carried out checks on the strength of the monorail pillars and DBKL would be focusing on works to test the lower ground stucture after this," he told Bernama when contacted.

He was updating the follow-up action on the occurrence of the two sinkholes at a tunnel at the Jalan Imbi intersection on Wednesday.

In the morning incident on Wednesday, part of the 35-metre underground tunnel which is under construction for four vehicle lanes to ease congestion at the Jalan Imbi intersection, collapsed to a depth of five metres following soil movement.

Service for the monorail route between Jalan Imbi and Jalan Hang Tuah was suspended following the collapse.
