Malaysian soldiers injured after ceiling collapses at DSA grand finale

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Two army personnel were injured when a portion of a ceiling on the second floor balcony of the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) collapsed.

The incident occurred during an army demonstration held in conjunction with the Defence Services Asia (DSA) exhibition at about 5pm on Thursday.

The demonstration, dubbed "Malaysian Army Live Demonstration" involved the firing of high-powered weapons and bombs held just outside PWTC.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Azizan Ismail said the army personnel suffered minor injuries.

"They sustained injuries on their heads and body. Both men have been sent to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment," he said.

He added firemen also checked the safety of the building following the incident.

"No other injuries were reported. We will work with PWTC personnel to ascertain safety features within the building," he said.

He explained that the victims were standing on the balcony with other army personnel during the demonstration.

"The two victims are stable," he said.

He also confirmed that the cause for the collapsed ceiling was the live demonstration.

The DSA was held at PWTC since Monday, and concluded on Thursday.

The live demonstration was meant as the grand finale for the four-day defence and security event.
