KUALA LUMPUR - A Malaysian former scholar who shot to infamy with his steamy sex videos and racially provocative online postings have put up a video lampooning the azan, the Muslim call to prayer, with what he called an "R&B cover" in his latest antic.

The video, entitled "Muslim Call to Prayer - Azan (R&B cover)" published on his Facebook page on Tuesday, featured Alvin Tan, topless and wearing a pair of shades, playing a keyboard while reciting the azan.

His video, lasting two minutes and 50 seconds, has been viewed more than 245,000 times and received at least 1,300 likes by Wednesday morning.

Some netizens found the video amusing, while others, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, fumed.

"This idiot is really getting on my nerves! Can someone out there do mankind a favour and knock some common sense into this dimwit? You can hate the country and the leaders but mocking a religion is totally uncalled for," said one user Eugene Tan.

Tan, 27, a former Asean scholarship holder reading law at the National University of Singapore, first gained notoriety in October 2012 when he and his then Malaysian girlfriend Vivian Lee who was at that time 23 years old, released their sex videos on their widely viewed blog called Sumptuous Erotica which has since ceased.

In July 2013 during the holy fasting month of Ramadan, the couple, better known collectively as Alvivi, sparked an uproar in the Muslim community after posting a picture of themselves tucking into bak kut teh, a popular Chinese pork dish, accompanied by the message "Selamat Berbuka Puasa" (Happy Breaking Fast) and a halal logo. Eating pork is haram, or forbidden, in Islam.

They were later charged with sedition and faced up to RM50,000 (S$18,622) in fines, five years' jail, or both. In 2014, Tan and Lee obtained permission from the court to leave for Singapore to shoot a documentary on their lives. While Lee returned, Tan jumped bail and instead fled to the United States where he is said to be seeking asylum.
