Malaysia identifies more suspects allegedly involved in militant activities

JITRA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Police have identified more individuals in a number of states suspected of being involved in militant activities, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

He said police would be conducting operations to nab the individuals involved.

"There are more (suspects)...we will make an announcement when we have arrested them," he said after the Workers' Day celebration at Dewan Wawasan here on Thursday.

It was reported that another woman with alleged links to a militant cell was arrested in Kuala Lumpur. The 55-year-old widow was detained in Keramat on Tuesday morning.

Her arrest brings to 10 the number of suspects picked up for allegedly planning to launch bomb attacks in Malaysia and other secular Muslim countries.

Of the nine held in simultaneous raids by the Special Branch Counter-Terrorism Unit on Monday, six were in Selangor and three in Kedah.

Aged between 25 and 56, they included students, odd job workers and professionals.

Of those arrested, a man in his 30s is said to be the mastermind behind the cell.

The group is believed to have been operating since last October and recruited members via Facebook.
