WASHINGTON - Former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called on Europe to take action against Russia over a Malaysian civillian jet that was shot down above Ukraine on Thursday.

There is "some growing awareness that it probably had to be Russian insurgents" who took down the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, said Mrs Clinton in a TV interview on Thursday night, the Bloomberg reported.

She was referring to pro-Russian rebels who have been fighting Ukrainian government forces and now control the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine where the plane crashed and killed all 298 people on board.

"Europeans have to be the ones to take the lead on this" if Russia is found culpable, she urged.

"It was a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur over European territory. There should be outrage in European capitals."

Kiev accuses pro-Russian separatists of shooting down the airliner with help from Russian intelligence representatives.

But Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has denied Russian involvement in the fighting in Ukraine, put the blame on Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko who refused to extend a shaky ceasefire with the rebels.
