KUALA TERENGGANU (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A diabetic woman in the Malaysian city of Kuala Terengganu who was rushed to hospital seven hours before her wedding ended up being married off while still unconscious.

Harian Metro reported that former car saleswoman Siti Aisyah Abdul Nasir, 23, was admitted to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital on Jan 27.

However, the hospital granted her a temporary discharge two days later so that she could attend her solemnisation ceremony on Jan 30.

On the eve of her wedding, the bride-to-be suddenly encountered problems trying to inject medication into her body, leaving her weak and with breathing difficulties.

Her family then rushed her to the hospital again, where she was taken to the intensive care unit.

The groom, Mr Mohd Faizal Hashim, 29, said he decided to go ahead with the ceremony after discussions with Ms Siti Aisyah's family and the imam.

"I spent a few hours after the ceremony to mingle with the guests before rushing to hospital to see my wife, who was then still unconscious.

"It is a heavy test, but I accept this and will continue to take care of my wife," said Mr Mohd Faizal, who works at an offshore petroleum platform.

Ms Siti Aisyah said she had been looking forward to wearing the bridal outfit her mother made for her and taking part in the ceremony.

"I did not get the experience. It is even sadder that my husband underwent the solemnisation alone, but I am grateful to be married to such an attentive man," she said.

On the legality of the solemnisation, Marang district religious officer Shukri Faiz Jusoh said according to the Shafie school of thought, a wedding with a wali mujbir (guardian of the bride), who was the bride's father, was allowed, despite the bride not being present.

"If the bride does not agree, she can then refer to the syariah court to decide the status of the marriage," he said.
