Body found on Malaysia island is missing Briton Gareth Huntley: police

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - A body found on a Malaysian island is that of British tourist Gareth Huntley who went missing during a jungle hike, police said Saturday.

Zakaria Ahmad, head of crime investigation in the eastern state of Pahang, said DNA results showed that the body discovered on Tioman Wednesday was the 34-year-old.

He added the cause of death had not yet been determined.

Mr Huntley disappeared on the island off the east coast of Malaysia on May 27, leading to a major manhunt. He had been a volunteer at the Juara Turtle Project in Kampung Juara on Tioman island.

It is believed he went on a solo trek to the waterfalls. When he failed to return, his friends, other tourists and several villagers went to look for him. A police report was later lodged.

A Facebook page was also set up to raise awareness of Mr Huntley's disappearance. The Find Gareth Huntley page was set up by his friends, who said on the page that they are "extremely worried", and urged faster progress in the search.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Mr Huntley was employed as a portfolio analyst by insurer RSA Singapore. He had been travelling in the region before starting his job, said Find Gareth Huntley.
