GEORGE TOWN - A man believed to be a foreigner has been found dead, with his throat slit and several stab wounds on his body, in front of a shrine near a park on Penang island, the Star daily reported on Monday.

The discovery is the latest in a rash of killings to have spooked Penang this year. At last count the toll was reportedly 51 murders, of which 18 victims were Malaysians and 33 foreigners.

Most of the foreigners were Myanmar workers killed over what police say were personal grudges. Seventeen suspects from Myanmar have been detained.

Penang CID Chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mazlan Kesah, who was gathering evidence at the scene of the latest gruesome homicide, was quoted by the Star as saying that the killing occurred between 2am and 5am on Monday. The daily said the victim was a foreigner, although police said his nationality could not be determined for now.

"Initial findings showed that there were signs of struggle and self-defence, from the wounds inflicted on the deceased," he said.

It was believed that more than one suspect was involved in the incident, reported the Star. The case has been classified as murder.

"We are going all out to trace the suspects involved," said SAC Mazlan, according to the Star.
