KOTA KINABALU (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A 26-year-old Malaysian mother is pining for her three-year-old son who went missing after her husband's car was stolen nearly 48 hours ago.

As Low Meng Yew's disappearance continues to boggle police, a distraught Ms Yong Siau Yee is hoping that her son would be immediately released unharmed by his captors.

"She is very shaken," said a family friend, who declined to be named.

"I appeal to whoever is holding him to please, please let the innocent boy go. I believe that it will be the best Mother's Day gift for her."

In a Facebook posting by Ms Michelle Lim, a family member, there was an offer of a RM20,000 reward for the safe return of Meng Yew.

He was wearing a green shirt and a pair of blue pants the morning he went missing last Friday.

In her posting, Lim said: "Little Mingyou, you've been missing for so many hours. We miss you so badly. I wonder if you're hungry, naughty, crying? You keep appearing in my mind, just can't stop thinking of you.

"Dear God, can you hear everyone praying? Please send him back to us, our hearts are breaking. I miss your hugs, your kisses, your laugh, your manja."

Meng Yew was sleeping in the back seat of the vehicle when his father Low Yee Sheng, 31, left the engine running while he went to the restroom at a petrol kiosk at Kg Air in town here at 5.50am last Friday.

The car was recovered at around 9.30am at the Atkinson Tower car park area, along Signal Hill, about 2.5km away the same day, but Meng Yew was not in it. His milk bottle and bag were still inside the vehicle.

District police chief Asst Comm Jauteh Jikun said they had yet to receive any positive leads.

"A special task force has been set up to find the boy," he said. "There has been no calls."

Police, who have classified the case as kidnapping and vehicle theft, have alerted and distributed photos of the boy to all the police personnel in the state as well as at the exit points in Sabah.

Those with information on the boy's whereabouts can contact Karamunsing police station at 088-529270 or 088-529207, or the investigating officer at 016-357 2935 or the district crime investigating officer at 019-810 3350, or Jauteh at 019-803 9520.
