5.8 quake strikes between Andaman Islands and Myanmar

NEW DELHI (AFP) - A moderate 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of the Andaman Islands on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said.

The agency said the quake struck at 7:41 pm (9.41pm Singapore time) in the Bay of Bengal between Myanmar's western coastline and the Andaman Islands at a depth of 10km. There were no immediate reports of damage.

USGS said the quake's epicentre lay 284km east of Port Blair and 365km west of Myeik, the nearest major city in Myanmar.

The region lies on the Sunda megathrust, an intensely seismic area of the world where quakes are a common occurrence.
