Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday that it had learnt that 15 Malaysians, allegedly involved in terrorist activities, have been killed in Syria.

"Malaysia learned from the Permanent Representative of Syria to the United Nations in New York in a press conference on 18 June 2014 had alleged that 15 Malaysian nationals involved in terrorism and jihadist activities with the militant Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant had been killed in Syria," the ministry said in a statement.

Malaysia said it is trying to verify this information.

The statement also said that apart from Malaysians, citizens from other countries, including several Asean countries, were allegedly involved in such activities in Syria.

Last week, Malaysian media reported that 30 Malaysians have joined the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militant group to fight in Iraq and Syria, and more are lining up to become recruits. ISIS is also known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.

It remains unclear how many had entered Iraq or Syria, with 15 of the suspects nabbed in Malaysia. The government did not say whether the remaining 15 members were still in the country.

The men were recruited via social media and small religious discussion groups, the New Straits Times (NST) said, citing intelligence reports.

The news came soon after reports that Malaysia's first suicide bomber had carried out a bombing mission in Iraq on May 26.
