President Tan meets China president Xi Jinping, Singapore youth athletes in Nanjing

NANJING - Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday congratulated Singapore on its 49th National Day, noting the strides the country has made since its independence in 1965, in a bilateral meeting with President Tony Tan Keng Yam here.

He also sent his regards to former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, in opening remarks in Mandarin.

In the meeting of the two heads of state on the sidelines of the Youth Olympic Games, President Tan reaffirmed strong bilateral relations between Singapore and China.

"Our relationship today between China and Singapore is sustainable and is multifaceted. Our economic and trade relations are excellent," said Dr Tan in English.
