Winter makes a chilly entrance

There is no doubt winter is well and truly here when Mount Balwang got blanketed in 10cm of snow at Yongpyeong Resort in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, South Korea, yesterday.

The snowfall was befitting of the day that in South Korea is referred to as Soseol, one of the 24 seasonal divisions of the lunar calendar that marks the onset of winter.

In China, key expressways were closed and flights were cancelled over safety concerns on Sunday, as a wide area of northern China was hit by a snowstorm that disrupted transportation.

Airports cancelled flights as planes would not be able to take off and land safely on slippery runways. The Beijing Capital International Airport alone cancelled about 150 flights by Sunday afternoon. More than 20 flights were delayed at Tianjin Binhai International Airport.
