Sun, sand and surf - in Egypt

Bored by the mummies and museums in Egypt?

Sandboarding - like these two men in Wadi el-Rayan, some 90km off the tourist track in Cairo - might offer a refreshing change of scene.

Sandboarding is similar to snowboarding, only it takes place on sand dunes rather than snow-covered mountains.

The sport has fans throughout the world, mostly in desert or coastal areas where beach dunes are present.

The first major developments in sandboarding came around the same time snowboarding was taking off in the 1970s.

But the adventure sport has only gained traction in Egypt in the past five years.
