Seniors set a new record

Madam Liang Ya Di (second row, right), 93, and Mr Lian Qi Long (front), 82, did more than exercise yesterday when they took part in a mass qigong session.

They were among 88 seniors between 80 and 93 from the Qigong Shi Ba Shi Association (Singapore), who set a new record here for the largest mass exercise by octogenarians.

Qigong is a traditional Chinese breathing exercise popular among the elderly.

The event, held at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall, was part of the association's second National Health Qigong Tournament.

Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development, who was the event's guest of honour, presented a souvenir medal to each of the 88 seniors.

About 300 people competed in team and individual qigong events throughout the day yesterday.
