Olympics for nomads

Artists performing at the opening ceremony of the World Nomad Games last Saturday, in the hippodrome of the lakeside resort town Cholpon-Ata - around 270km outside Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.

The Games are being held in Kyrgyzstan till Thursday. There will be 23 different competitions at this nomadic equivalent of the Olympic Games, which are expected to bring together athletes from more than 40 countries.

The Games celebrate the history and culture of nomadic ethnic groups, and feature sports such as wrestling, horse wrestling and horse racing.
