Marking 2016 lying down

Skiing enthusiasts making up the number "2016" on the snow on Wednesday in Yantai, China's Shandong province.

In Shanghai, revellers looking to usher in the New Year are set to be disappointed, as the city authorities cancelled many of the festivities following last year's deadly stampede near its waterfront.

The incident killed 36 people and left 49 injured.

Elsewhere in the world, security for New Year's Eve celebrations was stepped up in the wake of the Paris terror attacks. Some cities such as Brussels and Paris also cancelled annual fireworks displays.
