Lighting up the sky for Fourth of July

Americans celebrated their country's 241st birthday on Tuesday in grand fashion: with parades, picnics and pyrotechnics.

In keeping with tradition, cities across the United States launched fireworks after dark, as seen here in the country's capital, with the US Capitol and Washington Monument in the foreground.

Crowds also gathered in Washington for an Independence Day parade and a Founding Fathers re-enactment, said Reuters. The US Independence Day commemorates July 4, 1776, when the American colonies' Declaration of Independence from Britain was adopted.

US President Donald Trump earlier tweeted: "Getting ready to celebrate the 4th of July with a big crowd at the White House. Happy 4th to everyone. Our country will grow and prosper!"

In a later tweet, he posted a photo of the White House lit up in red, white and blue with the hashtags #HappyIndependenceDay and #USA.

In Singapore, the American Association of Singapore held an early Independence Day celebration last Saturday at the Singapore American School, according to its Facebook page.
