Last man standing

A migrant, identified as 20-year-old Pelen Hussein from Syria, stands on top of a sinking boat as he waits to be rescued by members of the Turkish Coast Guard Air Command in the Aegean Sea off the waters of the Bay of Edremit, Turkey.

Twenty-seven people, including 11 children, drowned on Monday after their boat sank in the Aegean Sea while trying to cross from Turkey to Greece, the Turkish Coast Guard said.

The coast guard said it discovered the boat - carrying 40 people - sinking after it set off from Edremit in the western province of Balikesir in an apparent bid to reach the Greek island of Lesbos.

Turkey, which is hosting at least 2.5 million refugees from Syria's civil war, has become the main launchpad to Europe for migrants fleeing conflict, persecution and poverty.
