The fountains on the bank of the river Manzanares in Madrid provide the perfect refuge for those reeling from the brutal heatwave on Sunday (June 18). Temperatures soared across Spain at the weekend, with the mercury going above 40 deg C in the Spanish capital and other parts of the country.

Jumping into the Lis river in Leiria, Portugal is the only answer for some as temperatures go as high as 43 deg C. The country is emerging from three days of national mourning after at least 64 people were killed and more than 150 injured at the weekend (Saturday, June 17) in Portugal's worst wildfire.
