Orthodox Christians across Russia and Belarus marked the Orthodox Epiphany by immersing themselves in freezing waters on January 19, 2016. Many people were undeterred by the weather, which in some places, plunged to about minus 33 degrees Celsius, as they dipped themselves in icy lakes, fonts, and ice-filled tubs. The religious ceremony commemorates the batism of Jesus Christ who was baptised in the River Jordan.
