Historic moment for monks

A Buddhist monk snapping a photograph as he and other monks from Myanmar and Thailand take part in an alms-offering ceremony in Mandalay, in northern Myanmar, yesterday.

The service - the first joint alms ceremony between the two nations - was attended by around 10,000 Buddhist monks.

Alms-giving is one of the most common practices among Thai and Myanmar Buddhists. Offering food is seen as a way to support the monks who study and practise Buddha's teachings.
