Basilica built over decades

A scale model of the Sagrada Familia Basilica in front of its uncompleted towers in Barcelona, Spain, shows what the edifice will look like once completed, years after the project was first started.

Yesterday, architect Jordi Fauli announced in an annual report that the basilica would finally be finished by 2026, with its six central towers to be ready by 2022.

The construction of the basilica, which was designed by well-known Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, started back in 1880.

However, Gaudi was unable to finish the building as he was struck by a tram in 1926, and died of his injuries at age 73.

The building's complicated design has also made it difficult to complete, with Mr Fauli among the ninth generation of architects to inherit the responsibility to finish Gaudi's work.

Even though it is still a work in progress, the Sagrada Familia Basilica is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city.
