Walk in slippers raises over $100,000 for children

A WALK in which the 1,800 participants wore slippers raised more than $100,000 for three children's charities.

Those who took part in the November event by the non-profit organisation Project Happy Feet, walked 3km in East Coast Park.

The distance was symbolic of that walked by children living in rural areas in other countries, sometimes in bare feet, to get to school every day.

The total amount was raised through participation fees, donations and sponsorship.

The bulk of the money raised - more than $85,000 - went to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, which gives children from low-income families a monthly sum to help them cover school-related expenses such as meals and transport.

A cheque was presented to the fund's general manager, Ms Martina Wong, on Wednesday.

The remaining amount of more than $21,000 will be split between two children's charities in Cambodia and Vietnam to help children remain in school through funding programmes and scholarships.

This year, the slipper event will be held on Nov 4.

An overseas version in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam is in the pipeline.
