Ousted Hougang MP Yaw Shin Leong will have to inform Parliament within a week if he intends to appeal against or challenge his expulsion from the Workers' Party, said Speaker Michael Palmer on Friday.

Announcing this at the start of the parliamentary session, Mr Palmer said the Clerk of Parliament wrote a letter to Mr Yaw on Friday morning asking him to give her his decision in writing by next Friday, Feb 24.

Workers' Party (WP) secretary-general Low Thia Khiang wrote to Mr Palmer on Thursday to inform him that Mr Yaw had been expelled from the party on Feb 14. Since the announcement of his expulsion on Wednesday, Mr Yaw has been uncontactable and is understood to have left the country.

Said Mr Palmer on Friday: 'It is presently unknown whether Mr Yaw is appealing against the WP decision or is otherwise challenging his expulsion.'
