Probe into City Harvest came after complaints: Chan Chun Sing
The probe into City Harvest Church was sparked by feedback and complaints on possible misuse of church funds received in early 2010, said Acting Minister for Community Development Youth and Sports Chan Chun Sing in Parliament on Monday.
The investigation was not triggered by the governance review the Commissioner of Charities undertook of the church and six other large charities in 2008, said the minister.
City Harvest Church founder Kong Hee, 47, and four senior church members were arrested two weeks ago and charged with conspiring to cheat the church of millions of dollars.
The arrests came after two years of investigations by the Commissioner of Charities and the Commercial Affairs Department, and the severity of the case led the Commissioner to suspend eight members, including Kong and Ms Ho, as board members or agents of the church.
