A NEW community rehabilitation centre will be set up as the Government enhances measures to help new, young drug abusers, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs Masagos Zulkifli said in Parliament on Wednesday.
Young abusers will attend the centre after being detained for a short period in the Drug Rehabilitation Centre (DRC). The new centre is a step-down arrangement which is meant to enhance the abusers' rehabilitation and help them with education and employment, said Mr Masagos, who chaired an inter-agency task force on drugs.
The Government will also do more to prevent abusers from relapsing. Since the start of this month, all long-term offenders assessed to be at high risk of relapse must undergo enhanced supervision after they are released.
Apart from regular urine supervision, they will face other restrictions such as strict curfew hours and electronic monitoring, go for intensive compulsory counselling and receive help with employment and shelter. About 500 high-risk inmates will be placed on this regime next year, said Mr Masagos during the debate on changes to the Misuse of Drugs Act.
