'Allegations of Bersih involvement won't affect bilateral relations'
Singapore-Malaysia relations will not be affected by allegations that Singapore diplomats took part in an electoral reforms rally in Kuala Lumpur in April, says Foreign Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam.
'Our ties with Malaysia are very strong... Both governments want to preserve the strong relationship and continue to work together bilaterally and regionally,' he said.
Responding to a question from MP Sitoh Yih Pin (Potong Pasir), Mr Shanmugam told Parliament on Monday that he has spoken twice to his Malaysian counterpart Anifah Aman to stress that Singapore diplomats had not participated in the Bersih 3.0 political rally, and had been present only as impartial observers.
Asked whether Singapore should take umbrage at such allegations, which first surfaced on some blogs, Mr Shanmugam dismissed the sources as obscure blogs with limited readerships. He assured the House that the negative sentiments were not shared by the Malaysian government.
