Flagship art fair Art Stage Singapore announces 2016 fair dates

Time to bookmark your arty dates. January 21 to 24. These are the dates for Art Stage Singapore, South-east Asia's flagship art fair.

Singapore's leading contemporary art fair will kick off the 2016 international visual arts calendar with its sixth edition at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre. The fair's by-invite-only vernissage will be on January 20.

The event is not just an art fair, but a "coming together" of art, artists, events and a broader community of people interested in the arts. That has long been the aim of Art Stage Singapore director Lorenzo Rudolf.

In its next edition, Mr Rudolf intends to continue with this by featuring both established as well as emerging contemporary artists from the region and beyond.

After a few initial hiccups, the fair has found its footing with a bigger push of Singapore and South-east Asian galleries. It once again will be the place to "discover the vibrant and diverse art scenes of South-east Asia", according to a statement released by the organisers.

The growing vigour of the South-east Asian art scene can also be seen in the increasing number of galleries from the region. This year, there were eight galleries from the Philippines and 10 from Malaysia, the most at the fair from these countries.

The highly successful fifth edition in January this year attracted a total of 51,000 visitors over its five-day run, and according to the organisers, closed on stronger than ever sales.
