Friday marks the one-year anniversary of the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the beloved monarch of Thailand.
The Royal Cremation has been scheduled for Oct 25 to 29 and the royal cremation day, Oct 26, has been declared a public holiday.
It is a sad time for the nation and visitors should respect Thailand and its people and refrain from inappropriate and disrespectful behaviour as well as wearing indecent clothes. Assess and match the mood of the people around you.
Many Thais will be wearing black during the ceremony period as a mark of respect. While this is not necessary for visitors, wearing muted colours, such as a black or white shirt or a black ribbon, will be a welcome show of respect.
With the exception of Bangkok's Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the venues of the Royal Cremation which will be closed till Oct 29, all other tourist attractions across Thailand will be open as usual during the five-day cremation period.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand says all transport, banks, shopping areas, hospitals and other public services will be operating as usual, but recommends that visitors check with their travel agent or reassess their travel routes as transport in some areas of Bangkok may be affected.
