HOTEL HISTORY TOUR

The North Wing of the 150-year- old Galle Face Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka, has undergone a thorough renovation of its 72 rooms and suites and public areas.

Every room was stripped and updated with new interiors and mahogany furniture, new marble was added to the bathrooms and private balconies with sea views have been added to 21 rooms.

To celebrate the revamp's completion, the hotel, which opened its doors in 1864, has launched free history tours for in-house guests.

The half-hour tour takes guests to a number of hotel highlights. These include a cannonball that crashed into the hotel, then a boarding house, after an artillery practice misfire in 1845; and glass cabinets filled with mementos, images and stories of famous guests such as Harrison Ford - who stayed at the hotel while shooting Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (1984) - as well as writer Mark Twain and actress Vivien Leigh, who starred in Gone With The Wind (1939).

Tours are held every week on Tuesday at 11am and Thursday at 3pm and are free for hotel guests.
