BA doubles baggage allowance for students, Emirates sale and more

STUDENT SAVER

British Airways is giving students heading to the United Kingdom double the normal checked baggage allowance this September. They can check in up to 46kg of luggage, in addition to one carry-on luggage of up to 23kg.

The value student fares include return travel to London and one other destination in the United Kingdom, Europe, or via Heathrow Express trains to 11 destinations served by the Great Western Railway such as Bath, Cardiff, Exeter and Oxford.

Student value fares are also available for students travelling to destinations in the United States, including New York, Boston and Philadelphia, but these students will not enjoy a free stopover at a UK or European destination, or the complimentary train services.

The fares are available for booking now for travel starting in September.

EMIRATES DEAL FOR MELBOURNE

From now till June 30, Emirates is offering travellers an all-inclusive promotional fare from Singapore to Melbourne starting from $819 .

The flight is served by Emirates' daily A380 service, and the deal is applicable for travel to Melbourne from now till Dec 14.

HOTEL DEALS

Hotels.com is offering up to 40 per cent off accommodation in its Global Hotel Sale from now till Aug 26.

The discounts - which include 30 per cent off at the five-star Grand Hotel Saigon (rooms start at $111 ar night), and 40 per cent off at the four-star Ramayana Resort and Spa in Bali (rooms start at $63 a night) - apply for stays till Sept 26.

NEW HOTEL IN SRI LANKA

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has opened a new hotel on Sri Lanka's southern coast.

The 300-room beachfront Shangri-La Hambantota Resort & Spa sits on a 59ha former coconut plantation about 240km and a four-hour drive from Colombo, or 35km from Hambantota's Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport.

Guest rooms range from 48 to 240 sq m in size.

The resort's amenities include Chi, The Spa, where Ayurvedic treatments use 100 per cent organic herbs and natural products in 12 indoor and outdoor treatment rooms; three salt-water swimming pools and nature trails.

When Shangri-La's Golf and Country Club opens this month, the resort will be the first in Sri Lanka to have its own golf course. The 5,584m-long, par-70 course features three zones with infinity ocean views and wide fairways.

In celebration of its opening, the resort is offering a variety of packages such as the Safari Sri Lanka with a minimum four-night stay. Starting from US$247 (S$334) a night and available now till Dec 22, it includes half-day safaris to Sri Lanka's famous Yala National Park to see the elephants and leopards, a boat safari, daily breakfast and fresh fruit.
