The prestigious London theatre company Shakespeare's Globe, which made its debut here last year, will be returning this year with a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Shakespeare's popular comedy will run at the Esplanade Theatre from Nov 13 to 16. Tickets will be available from April 22 on online ticketing portal Sistic and will range in price from $58 to $148.
A Midsummer Night's Dream will be directed by the Globe's artistic director Dominic Dromgoole, and will employ traditional Renaissance costumes and staging. Dromgoole has directed a slew of Shakespearean plays, including King Lear, Romeo And Juliet and Hamlet.
Hong Kong-based production company ABA Productions, which also presented West End favourite The Woman In Black in Singapore last year, is bringing the play here.
Its executive producer, Matthew Gregory, tells The Straits Times: "The Globe wanted to bring in one of their established productions, one directed by Dominic Dromgoole himself... It's a classic genre that people will really want to see."
Last year, the Globe did a gender-bending take on The Taming Of The Shrew at Fort Canning Park with an all-female cast, directed by the young British director Joe Murphy. Gregory explains that because Midsummer is a larger production in need of a bigger stage, they felt that the Esplanade would be more appropriate. There will be about 15 actors and musicians on stage.
This week also marks the start of Shakespeare's Globe's two-year global tour of Hamlet, which aims to take the famous tragedy to every country in the world.
Gregory says that it is likely Hamlet will arrive in Asia and Singapore next year, after a tour through Europe.
