In Drama Box's Senang, playwright Jean Tay draws inspiration from the violent 1963 riots on the former penal colony Pulau Senang. The superintendent of the prison believed that he could reform the criminals through hard labour, but during the riots, all 316 detainees revolted, razing the penal colony to the ground. The play stars an all-male ensemble including (clockwise from far left) Peter Sau, Neo Hai Bin, Tay Kong Hui, Rei Poh, Oliver Chong and Ong Kian Sin.

NO COUNTRY: CONTEMPORARY ART FOR SOUTH AND SOUTH-EAST ASIA
The Centre for Contemporary Art in Gillman Barracks is hosting a small-scale show, No Country, by the famous Guggenheim Museum in New York. The exhibition is part of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, which aims to strengthen representation of art from different parts of the world. Leading Singapore contemporary artist Tang Da Wu's installation work Our Children (above), inspired by a Teochew parable, is shown alongside those of other regional heavyweights such as multi-disciplinary Indian artist Shilpa Gupta's 1:14.9.

TALK ON THE LIFE AND ART OF GEORGETTE CHEN
Art Outreach Singapore traces the life and work of local pioneer artist Georgette Chen (1906-1993) in this talk by Mae Anderson, the initiative's chairman.
Chen is one of the well-known exponents of the Nanyang style of art, which combines Western painting techniques with tropical subject matter and Asian themes. Her works include Self-Portrait (1946, above).
The lecture will highlight stylistic distinctions between different periods of Chen's artistic career, from her early beginnings as an artist in Paris, through to her time spent in China and Hong Kong before finally settling down in Singapore.

PALIMPSEST
Vietnamese-American artist Phi Phi Oanh turns lacquer from a protective finish into a medium for a light installation in Palimpsest. She applies coats of the lacquer to glass slides and uses them to project images on silk screens and walls. The result is an exhibition of 81 lacquer images ranging from organic shapes to silhouettes of major monuments in the world.
